Today my son is waking up to a new reality; Marine Corps Basic Training. Three months ago, at age 19, he made the decision to become an active-duty marine. A decision that surprised his parents as he gave up a four year college ride in favor of the corps. I call that self-empowerment, and taking control of ones own destiny. I couldn't be prouder. College can wait.
Having grown up a Navy-brat, the past three months were full of well humored jabs over Navy / Marine Corps superiority between father and son, with his recruiter jumping in the fray. Fun times. Long story short, thank God for U.S. Marines!
As my son stood at the door, standing next to his recruiter, I gave him the biggest hug I could muster, telling him, "Son, don't let those Drill Instructors give you any lip". (naturally thinking that might earn him 1000 pushups... Hoorah!)
In honor of sons and daughters who serve as U.S. Marines, this speech, delivered by Major General John F Kelly, provides deep insight into the mission they so boldly, so freely and without any hesitation, execute in perseverance of our freedoms;
